Point cloud portrait

A photo that rests crisp and shatters into particles only around the pointer.

This experiment needs JavaScript and WebGL. The write up below describes what it does.

Notes

Background
The first v2 hero lived permanently as a point cloud with a cursor repel. It read as scattered dots rather than a face, and the repel barely moved anything.
How it works
The photo now rests as a textured plane, with a depth map as an alpha mask so the background drops out. Near the pointer the plane opens a soft hole and only the points whose home is inside that radius burst outward; the rest of the image stays crisp. The cloud samples 190 points across on capable devices and 116 on touch, low memory or low core devices.
Now
Moved here from the v2 home page. It loads only after you press Run, and reduced motion shows the resting photo.
